Gutentag from England!

Ungelesener Beitrag von jimothy84 »

First off can I apologise if this is in the wrong section, my understanding of the German language is not good at all! Secondly, let me apologise that this is written in English!

Anyway, hello! I'm James and I'm from England. I live in a town called Swindon. The reason for me finding my way onto your website? My dad was in the british army and I was born in Iserlohn! We were stationed in soest for a few years before we moved back to england. I have no idea how the brits are percieved amongst the locals, I hope its not too bad!

I google'd "iserlohn" one day and the roosters website came up, I was surprised as I'm a hockey fan myself. Swindon has had a senior hockey team since 1986 and until 1996 we were called the Wildcats. Then we were the Icelords, funded and sponsored by EA Sports and we won the british title. We went bankrupt the next year tho, d'oh! Over the next 8 years we changed owners and names several times, from The Chill to The Phoenix, then to The Lynx, then back to The Wildcats. Last june we changed our primary colours to red and white, to match those of the Swindon football and speedway teams.

The Wildcats play in the 2nd division on british ice hockey, we aren't that good at the minute but I'm glad we've got a team, some other british clubs are in a bad financial state at the minute! Most of our team are semi-pro, one of our Defencemen is a fireman! :P compared to other teams in our league the Wildcats are very young, we have an ok youth set-up here, and the Swindon under-18s team has just won the league!

Anyways, that's enough about me. Again I'm sorry that this isn't in German, I promise to try a post or two in german in the future! Thanks for taking the time to read all of this :)

Hi James!

There's always been a theory - and now it seems to be more than just that - that hockey lies in our genes. This year we're only celecrating the 50th birthday of hockey in the Sauerland but it feels like it's always been here. I just wonder what your fellow Darwin would have thought about it some 200 years ago? ;-)

Your local team seems to be quite busy going bancrupt and starting all over again but then again this seems to be the time..

Over here bancrupcy is not that common as it seems to be on the island.. Last one we had was.. hm.. um.. can't remember the right year.. some 13 or so years ago. We fought all the way back from the lowest division up to the premiere division, the DEL. This year hasn't been that good to us.

As a small market team we had great success last season finishing 5th overall and now we find us at the brink of elimination from clinching a playoff berth. But that's just how sports go. There're better times ahead I'm sure.

Til then I'll personally enjoy some NHL games on TV, maybe some NHL openers in Europe (been to Stockholm in 08 and London in 07) and we're also pretty excited hosting the World Championchips next year, featuring a record setting opening game in a soccer stadium with well over 60.000 (62.000 I think) fans. Now that's really something! :D

There are two things i wanna say...First, the Crowd should be at 74.000, because you can sell the regular seats , plus you can sell tickets for around the rink. its way smaller than a soccer field so the space will be filled with seats.

And for "al" the NHL ´09 Season Opener is planned at the O2 World Berlin.
Play-Offs starten auf Platz 6,
und bei Platz 4 zahl ich das Bier!!

Usually there are two seperate opening matchups going on. Last year it was Prague and Stockholm, the year before it was London and I guess Prague also. So let's see what may pop up for 09. It's believed that Stockholm and Helsinki are still in the race...

Thanks for the welcome :)

Sorry to see the Wolfsburg game didn't go your way!

Ice hockey doesn't get much coverage at all in England, they show 1 game from the league above the Wildcats a week on Sky Sports, and NHL is shown on another sports channel. Ice hockey is growing in Britain though, our teams are slowly getting better. Hopefully the Wildcats should stay in business for a long time, the owner is an ex-player and quite a good business man.

What is your average crowd on a matchday?

Cheers, James

Our average is 3827 which ranks 12th in the league. The leagues' average is 5782 ranging from 1777 (Duisburg Foxes) to 13747 (Berlin Polar Bears).

Cool, the Wildcats average is just above 1000 I think (no official figures announced), with the highest attendance this year over 2000, who saw us beat Isle of Wight Raiders 6-0. Some British Elite league teams have fewer fans than us! I shall certainly be keeping my eye on the Roosters from now on. Fingers crossed for a strong finish to the season for both the Wildcats and Roosters! Do you guys get many fans from the armed forces? Are the barracks still in use?

Cheers, James

Since 1990 (year of German reunion east/west), foreign troops here were reduced more and more. Before that, at least the sight of British, American and Russian soldiers was quite usual. Nowadays, they have become rare. In our region there were also Canadians (which is said the be the root of Sauerland hockey) and Belgians, but this was reduced to zero, as far as I know. So actually we don’t get many fans from them - I cannot tell what this was like before 1990. Nearly all of the foreign baracks I know are no longer in use. The same goes for the German Bundeswehr baracks in our town and in the neighbourhood.

I can tell you one thing: there still is the radio station BFBS. Please don’t ever take it away. And another: people born in Iserlohn are always welcome.

Thanks for that :)

a good weekend for my Wildcats, a 3-1 win against Slough Jets and a 5-4 loss against Peterborough Phantoms, who are 2nd in the league and beat us 10-0 last time we played :P (we were without 4 key players and our new import player couldnt play, it wasnt a good game :P) we put up a good fight against them and hopefully we should still make the playoffs!

Ich denke da hast du Recht! - I think in this point you are right!

@jimothy84

There are some Brits, who stay after their times at the Britisch Army in Iserlohn. Some are married german girls and stay. I don´t know if I am right, but I think that the Father from our local player Sebastian Jones is British too. His name is Alan Jones. So there are some British still living in Iserlohn and some of them are interessted in Hockey and the Iserlohn Roosters.

Before the British Military leaves Iserlohn for ever, they became the honour of "Freedom of the city" - "Key of the City"!

The Roosters played in the last seven years four games in Great Britian, I think the played against Manchester Storm, Sheffield Steelers, Belfast Giants and a another team, that I didn´t can recall at the moment. I was 2002 with the Roosters in Manchester and I loved to travel with my team to the UK, it was a hard tour (16 hours sitting in a bus), but we had a lot of fun on this trip.

If you plan someday a trip in the town you were born, so I hope you will come during the hockey season, so that you can visit a game of the Roosters and have some beer with us. I think the most of us will welcome you here and I promise you, you will have a nice time in the city where your life starts and where you get this hockeygene! ;)

Iserlohn = HOCKEYTOWN!!!

Nur der IEC!

P.S.: The British Military Hospital were you was born was only 500 meters away from the rink, but it didn´t existing anymore. Today in the buildings of the BMH is a Private University and a Privat School.

You mean, poor little @jimothy84 was probably born in the auditorium of the B.I.T.S. (Business and Information Technology School) where I once lost one half of by brain ?   In the corner where my chewing gum is still pasted under the desk ?

Really, funny types in Britain.

i'm glad to hear the old hospital building has found a new use :P

i'm certainly considering a trip to Iserlohn in the near future, and i think it'd be rude not to try to get to a Roosters game :P my girlfriend likes ice hockey too so i cant see a problem there! however a trip to watch BVB on the same trip might be a bit too much, she hates football :(
